Project Spotlight: Reinforcing Riverbanks & Reservoirs with Engineered PVC Gabion Mattresses in Banteay Meanchey

High-capacity water containment and flood defense systems demand materials engineered to endure persistent hydraulic stresses, shifting subgrades, and harsh environmental conditions. We recently completed the manufacturing, quality certification, and on-site distribution of heavy-duty PVC-coated wire mesh mattresses for a landmark national water resources development in Banteay Meanchey Province.
Project Background & Scope
This revetment initiative forms a core component of Cambodia’s strategic infrastructure and flood protection upgrades under the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology (MOWRAM).
- Initiative: Irrigation Development and Flood Mitigation Project.
- Scope of Works: Armoring over 24 km of combined embankment slopes and 87+ km of main canal routes across the Vang Haeng, Pongro, and Kanseng reservoirs.
- Primary Objective: Mitigate seasonal flood risks, prevent severe hydraulic slope scour, and secure long-term water storage capacity for surrounding agricultural communities.

Material Engineering & Technical Specifications
To provide long-term corrosion resistance against submerged conditions, acidic soils, and heavy abrasion, all wire units were manufactured with heavy zinc galvanization and an extruded PVC outer protective layer in strict compliance with ASTM A 975 and BS EN 10244 standards:
| Component | Technical Value | Standard / Compliance |
| Unit Dimensions | 6.0 m (Length) × 2.0 m (Width) × 0.3 m (Height) | Standard Revetment Mattress |
| Internal Diaphragms | 5 cell dividers per unit to secure rock aggregate | ASTM A 975 |
| Mesh Pattern | 80 mm × 100 mm double-twisted hexagonal mesh | ASTM A 975 |
| Mesh Wire Core / Outer | Ø 2.4 mm (Steel Core) / Ø 3.4 mm (PVC Coated) | Heavy Galvanized + Extrusion |
| Selvedge / Edge Wire | Ø 3.2–3.4 mm (Steel) / Ø 4.2–4.4 mm (PVC Coated) | ASTM A 975 |
| Lacing Wire Supplied | Ø 2.0–2.2 mm (Steel) / Ø 3.0–3.2 mm (PVC Coated) | Matched PVC Sheathing |
| Zinc Coating Density | >245g/m pure zinc mass | BS EN 10244 |
| Tensile & Flexibility | Tensile strength >450 MPa elongation at break > 20% | High Ductility Core |

Logistical Execution & On-Site Deployment
- Factory Packaging & Quality Control: Each mattress was mechanically folded, compressed, and banded into uniform bundles ($5/50$ units per package) with identification tags to facilitate seamless offloading and inventory verification at the work front.
- Direct-to-Site Logistics: Coordinated heavy flatbed transport fleets delivered materials directly from the central production facility to designated embankment stations across the reservoir perimeter.
- Slope Armoring Application: Following earthwork grading, non-woven geotextile filtration fabric was laid along the slopes. The gabion units were expanded, laced together into a continuous framework, hand-filled with graded angular stone, and wired shut. The resulting monolithic, flexible, and free-draining revetment matrix dissipates wave energy, prevents subgrade washout, and ensures reliable slope stability.
